27 November 2007 – At a press conference last week, the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) announced plans to build a wattage meter manufacturing plant in Addis Ababa.
Mihret Debebe, general manager of EEPCo, confirmed that if an investment license was granted, the meter manufacturing plant could be operational by 2008.
With a capacity to produce 200 000 meters a year, the company would produce both prepaid and post paid meters for the local market and employ 200 technicians. It would also export meters to the rest of Africa.
EEPCo recently introduced prepaid meters in Addis Ababa and Adama. "The comments we received so far are very encouraging," Mr Debebe said.
