13 December 2007 – The West African Power Pool (WAPP) has announced that it will build power stations at three locations within the WAPP.
According to Engineer Joseph Makoju, chairman of the executive board of WAPP, the three power stations are 400MW at Maria Leta in Benin, 400MW in Aboadze in Ghana and 150MW in Senegal.
The plans come after a recommendation from a team of experts commissioned by the WAPP. The Emergency Power Security Study was initiated to find an urgent solution to the acute power shortages being experienced within ECOWAS.
The locations of the power stations were determined by a number of factors, including proximity to the West Africa Gas Pipeline and existing network infrastructure.
