26 September 2007 – The flow of water from Lake Victoria will not be increased to allow for more hydropower generation, the ministry of water has confirmed.

Energy minister Daudi Migereko failed to convince minister of water, Maria Mutagamba, to increase the power supply, despite the fact that the water level of the lake has risen.

"We agreed that, as we continue discussions on improving the situation, the current power generated should not be disrupted," Migereko said.

"The technical teams of the two ministries meet every two weeks and a decision to either increase or reduce water released for power generation will be determined in these meetings."

Unconfirmed sources say the water minister was under pressure from neighbouring countries and environmentalist groups.
