Smart payment solution for gas in South Africa

12 August 2013 – EnviroFuel, a private gas utility, has obtained an Itron smart payment system, as a part of an initiative to provide alternative energy sources to Waterfall Country Estate, in Johannesburg, South Africa. A partnership between EnviroFuel and Sasol Homegas, the initiative allows residents to be energy efficient, while easing the burden on the power grid.

Itron’s solution consists of 2,000 gas meters and a full online prepayment vending and management system that allows consumers to pay for gas online via credit card. This solution gives residents of Waterfall Country Estate convenient access to gas with prepayment meters. With increased availability and simple access, residents are better equipped to effectively manage their gas consumption. As a part of the project, Itron was responsible for solution installation and training and will provide on-going prepaid vending services in its managed services environment.

"EnviroFuel chose Itron because of its leadership and experience in the industry. Itron’s proven expertise and smart payment technology helps us reduce our reliance on the power grid, which has become increasingly strained with the increase of commercial and residential properties," Etienne Mitton, director of EnviroFuel, South Africa, says. “With prepaid gas, Waterfall Country Estate residents now have access to a reliable alternative energy source, mitigating escalating electricity costs.”

“Itron easily met EnviroFuel’s requirements and standards for a smart payment gas solution,” Damian Padachi, managing director of Itron, South Africa, says.
