Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) and ABB have signed a $25 million contract for the upgrade and expansion of the power transmission and distribution network SCADA systems for Nairobi.

Comprising five control centres, in Nairobi and surrounds, with redundant computer systems and the ABB network manager SCADA/EMS software, control, analysis and enhancement of the electrical network and power generation management, the system will manage morning and evening load. Unplanned disturbances can also be rapidly analysed in order to avoid large scale power outages.

The control centres will be linked to more than 90 substations and power stations, using 1 300 km of optical wire, digital power line carrier and radio communications.

The original SCADA system was supplied more than 20 years ago by ABB.
