South Africa has agreed to provide funds for the rehabilitation and modernisation of the Inga hydro electric dam, one of the biggest projects to be implemented under the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad).

This emerged after the fourth session of the South Africa-DRC Bi-national Commission, co-chaired by South African president Thabo Mbeki and DRC president Joseph Kabila in Kinshasa during the last week of August.

South Africa had already committed a US$200 million injection of funds to cover the construction of an interconnection grid to facilitate the distribution of electricity from the Inga power generation plants to various provinces in the DRC.
