Rural electrification vital for development

22 February 2008 – Eritrea’s minister of energy, Tesfai Gebresalassie, has stressed the importance of rural electrification to promote equitable social service in rural and urban areas.

Eritrean remote villageSpeaking at a workshop on rural electrification, the minister announced the 140 villages had received electricity in 2007 and that another 42 villages were due to be connected.

Commenting on the vital significance of electricity in all domains, the minister said that efforts were underway to distribute electricity to even the most rural areas, which have a "scattered- style distribution, through introducing new mechanisms on the basis of their geographical location."

Various papers presented at the workshop focused on programmes that have been implemented across the country.
