23 July 2009 - International Atomic Energy Agency director-general Mohamed ElBaradei, has said African countries should consider a regional approach to the use of nuclear technology.
"We have many programs in all our member states in the African continent in using nuclear techniques. These are the valuable techniques in increasing food production, extending people's life, making varieties through natural breeding and nutrition to ensure you have better productivity," ElBaradei said.
"We are doing our utmost in making sure that African countries are using the new technique in management, agriculture, industries and healthcare. In all these areas, we can do more. If we have additional resources, we can do much more." he added.
He continued that many African countries are interested in the option of nuclear energy for electricity provision from an energy security perspective and said the IAEA has been recommending a regional approach to developing nuclear.
