3 November 2008 – The deadline for public comment on the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) environmental impact study, has been extended by two weeks, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (Deat) announced.

According to environmental consultants, Acer Africa, a number of interested parties have requested an extension of the deadline, which was originally meant to close on 24 October.  The new deadline for submissions is now 7 November.

The proposed project  involves a high temperature nuclear reactor with a closed cycle gas turbine power conversion system.  Construction is expected to start in 2010 with power being online by 2014.
