‘Only US$10 billion spent on Nigerian power sector’ – minister

3 March 2008 – Allegations made by the speaker of the house for the Nigerian parliament, that close to US$16 billion has been spent on the power industry between 1999 and 2007, have been refuted by minister of state for energy (power) Hajiya Fatima Balaraba Ibrahim.

The minister said that only US$10 billion had been spent, as confirmed by President Yar ‘Adua earlier this year.

"The President collated the entire amount spent on power station rehabilitation, construction of new power stations, especially the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) transmission infrastructure and the National Rural Electrification Project among others to arrive at $10 billion," the minister said.
