Huambo, Angola — ESI-POWER.COM — 31 January 2012 – Angolan energy and water minister João Baptista Borges has announced that the inauguration of the Ngove hydroelectric dam “’ which will serve the provinces of Huambo and Bié “’ is scheduled to take place in August.
Cited by Angolan news agency Angop, the minister said that testing of the first turbine would start today, and the remaining generator groups would begin operating by the end of July.
The Ngove hydroelectric dam is located 119km from the city of Huambo, and has an installed capacity to produce 60 megawatts (MW) of power. Its reconstruction “’ which is in the hands of Brazilian construction company Odebrecht “’ is expected to cost US$150 million.
Construction work on the dam began in 1969 and came to a halt in 1975 due to the country’s civil war. It was taken up again in 1983 but stopped again in 1986.
The final reconstruction project, after the dam was partially destroyed again in 1990, began in mid 2001.
