19 February 2009 – The National Energy Regulator of South Africa will consider a number of factors when deciding the extend of the next electricity tariff hike, it was confirmed this week.  Factors to be considered include changes in the economic climate, and the government’s decision to guarantee loans for Eskom.

Said Thembani Bukula, regulatory member for electricity:  "Our target is to implement cost-reflective tariffs within five years, by 2013…and scalable tariffs is something we are likely to find,"

In June 2008 the regulator approved a 27% tariff increase, despite a requested 53% request from Eskom.
