In international news, Berlin-based smart solar solutions provider, Mobisol, received the Momentum for Change award from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) during the 2015 Climate Change Conference in Paris.

Mobisol was recognised among the sixteen “lighthouse activities” and won in the Information Communication Technology Solutions category.

A company statement said that this award highlights some of the most innovative, scalable and replicable examples of what people and companies are doing to address climate change.

“Mobisol [is] East Africa’s largest rent-to-own solar energy provider [and] has so far provided over 35,000 Rwandan and Tanzanian households and businesses with clean, affordable and reliable solar energy,” a company statement said.

Combating climate change

“Momentum for Change” is a programme organised by the UNFCCC Secretariat as part of wider efforts to mobilise action and ambition as national governments work toward adopting a new universal climate agreement.

Speaking during the award ceremony, UN general secretary Ban Ki-Moon noted the efforts made by the award winners in combating climate change.

He said: “The lighthouse activities of this years’ award winners highlight resourceful, innovative and replicable examples that can serve as a beacon of light to inspire others to take action.”

Commenting on the award, Mobisol’s CEO Thomas Gottschalk said: “The Paris agreement is a first step towards a more sustainable energy future. Now it’s up to leaders and communities worldwide to deliver on those promises.

“I strongly believe that we can develop and widely implement sustainable solutions for some of the world’s most pressing challenges and we are deeply grateful that Mobisol was honoured in this context as a solution presenting a Momentum for Change.”
