Reports from Cameroon confirm that mining and exploration company, Rio Tinto still plan to build a 1 000MW hydropower dam on the Sangaga River.
The output from the dam will be used to power a planned aluminium smelter at Kribi.
"For now our Cameroon programme remains intact and there is no cause for concern," Gerard Baluais, technical director for Cameroon said in a radio interview last week.
"That is why we are pursuing research into the construction of a 1 000MW hydro electricity dam to feed a new aluminium factory to be established at Kribi.
“This dam is at the centre of Rio Tinto Alcan group projects in Cameroon," he concluded.
