The DRC generates power through petroleum, natural gas, coal and hydro.
Congo is rich in hydroelectric sources, which have been underexploited for numerous reasons: DRC’s years long civil conflict; lack of investment and lack of developed infrastructure. Most of the country’s population live in rural areas, where their primary source of fuel is wood, which most believe is not the sustainable answer to consistent good quality power generation.
With rich mineral resources in the DRC, but poor infrastructure to value-add and refine the minerals and with a large population that has big needs for power, the DRC is now vigorously planning to construct and develop new generation facilities and expand the existing ones.
