12 May 2009 – Former Northern Cape Premier Elizabeth Dipuo Peters has been appointed the new minister for Energy.  Mrs Peters was the Northern Cape Province premier since 22 April 2004.

President Jacob Zuma on Sunday announced the former minerals and energy ministry would split in two.  A new ministry dedicated solely to mining will be headed by former safety and security deputy minister Susan Shabangu.

The new Energy minister has been invited to deliver the welcome address at the upcoming African Utility Week from 18-22 May at the CTICC in Cape Town.  African Utility Week has become the biggest annual forum for African and international power experts to come together and discuss strategies as well as technical improvements to the power industry.
