Eskom seeks firm SA commitment on nuclear power

Johannesburg, South Africa — ESI-AFRICA.COM — `06 September 2011 – South African national power utility Eskom Holdings has come out with an appeal for a South African commitment to additional future nuclear power in the country.

“South Africa needs to make a firm commitment now on building additional nuclear reactors to have new capacity online in 2023,” said Kannan Lakmeeharan, divisional executive of Eskom’s delivery unit.

In an address in here today, he pointed out that South African plans include 3,200MW of nuclear capacity coming on stream in 2023 and 2024. He said that decisions were required now if these units were to be completed in time.
