Eskom awards US$90 million Matla contract

8 January 2008 – Eskom has awarded a $90 million contract to power and automation technology group ABB. The contract is for the upgrade, replacement and refurbishment of the control systems and instrumentation at the Matla power station.

The 3 600MW coal fired power station was built in the early 1980s and the refurbishment contract is due for completion in 2014.

Eskom’s Koeberg nuclear
power station is due to undergo
refuelling soon.

In other news, Eskom announced that the Koeberg power station was due to refuelling during the early part of 2008 and warned that reserve margins continued to be tight, although no load shedding was expected.

When the refuelling of the Koeberg power station takes place, the Atlantis and Mossel Bay open cycle gas turbine peaking plants will run for extended periods to cope with demand.

Eskom has also announced that three of its previously mothballed power stations, Camden, Grootvlei and Komati are due to come on line in order to meet increased demand.
