28 July 2009 – The Hydropower Africa 2009 conference is currently receiving unprecedented media coverage with ESI Africa editor Nicholas McDiarmid being a sought after guest on countless TV and radio news and actuality programmes.

As a power industry expert and editor of the host publication of the event, Nicholas has so far been on E-TV, CNBC Africa, SABC2, SABC3 and SABC News International and SABC radio.  Several journalists from newspapers and press agencies are also attending the event.  Hydropower is a topical issue with the utilities industry looking for more renewable sources of energy.

Said Nicholas on the E Tv’s 24-hour news channel:  “For South Africa, hydropower is extremely important in terms of importing power from our neighbouring countries and the Southern African region.  The potential of hydropower on the continent is huge.  At present we only employ about 10% of the continent’s available hydropower.  In essence, when one looks at implementing full-scale hydropower projects in the long term, it is a source of energy that could power the entire continent and then some.  We could even be exporting to Europe in time.”
