21 November 2012 – Wade Walker, a wholly owned subsidiary of Murray & Roberts, has adopted fledgling electrical subcontracting company Vonakala Projects and Maintenance as an enterprise development (ED) partner, in line with Murray & Roberts commitment to BBBEE and the codes of good practice contained in South Africa’sconstruction sector charter. Vonakala’s primary service offering is auditing installations for Electrical Certificates of Compliance (COCs) as a sub-contract on projects where the electrical work has been completed.
“When we started looking for an ED partner, our objective was to identify an emerging company that provided services which addressed definite gaps in the market, and had a core technical competence in our field rather than supporting a company that required intensive capital injections or would compete in a well-established industry,” Colin Caister, HSE and HR manager at Wade Walker, says.
“We began by examining our own needs in the area of support and electrical compliance and decided to look for a company capable of issuing COCs for all electrical work on large scale projects. We had already worked with Vonakala’s registered master electrician and company member, Naresh Singh, while executing a contract on the Gautrain project and we felt that his start-up company would be the ideal ED project for Wade Walker.”
When Wade Walker came alongside Vonakala earlier this year, the company was in need of management support and financial backing and had not fully been launched into the marketplace. The two companies have since entered into a memorandum of understanding and the Wade Walker team is introducing Singh’s company to the full range of the company’s business activities. Vonakala has also been allocated office space at Wade Walker.
“From now on, we will support Vonakala with skills, administration and safety systems and compliance for outsourced work,” Caister says. “A high level of integrity and responsibility comes with COC work and this is where Vonakala is very strong. Wherever appropriate, we will sub-contract work to it. Vonakala’s work will not be restricted to the mining industry, as we will give the company every opportunity to source work across all industries, especially from local municipalities, government and the greater commercial sector.
