10 August 2010 – According to an interview with Hassan Younes, minister for electricity and energy in Egypt, the country has already invited a number of international firms for consultancy and project briefings in preparation for the construction of a nuclear power plant.
"Egypt’s nuclear project is progressing steadily and we expect to start the tender before the end of this year," Younes is reported to have said.
Included in those invited to tender are Areva, Westinghouse and Alstom.
This plan is in line with a wider strategy to develop Egypt’s soft and hard infrastructure in order to attract foreign investment and prepare for rapid population growth.
