22 January 2013 – In January 2013 the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) power utility Societe Nationale d’Electricite (SNEL) invited expressions of interest from international consultants to provide procurement and financial expertise for electricity utility projects including development of the Inga hydroelectric complex on the Congo River.

In December 2012 the DRC recruited consultants to serve on panels to study development of the Inga complex and transmission lines to deliver its power.

The 350MW Inga I and 1,424MW Inga II hydroelectric schemes are currently producing some 500 MW and are undergoing rehabilitation. The next phase is the proposed 4,300MW Inga III project, considered a stepping stone towards development of the Grand Inga hydroelectric complex that could ultimately generate 40,000 MW.
