13 November 2007 – Sebastião da Silva, the provincial director of the National Electricity Company in Angola has said that the Northern Uije province of the country will have a new hydroelectric dam (dubbed Luquixi 2") as from 2008.
Construction of the new dam, which was planned for this year, has encountered some challenges with the de-mining operations in the area. However, as soon as all the land mines have been cleared, building will start on site.
Built by the Tavares construction company, the 2MW turbines will be supplied by Jembas.
The dam will operate in parallel with the former Luquixi dam which has two turbines – one of 540KvA and the other of 340KvA.
Construction is expected to take between eight and ten months, some 400 meters down river from the original dam.
