The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) has signed six contracts with three Chinese companies for provision of supply services to rural towns and villages, it was reported this weekend.

The contracts have a total value of $124 million, says EEPCo general manager, Mihret Debebe.

Among the projects to be undertaken are a 400 kv Bahir Dar-Debremarkos-Addis Ababa, a 230 kv Tekeze-Endaselassie-Humera, a 230 kv Bedele-Mettu and a 230 kv Fincha’a-Gedo-Gefersa transmission stations and line installations.

85 percent of the money has been loaned from the Chinese government, with the Ethiopian government providing the balance of the funding.

According to sources, the projects are due for completion within 18 months.
