April election perfectly timed for African Utility Week Conference 2009

Kgalema Motlanthe
24 February 2009 – The organisers of African Utility Week are thrilled with the timing of this year’s national elections on Wednesday, 22 April.  “We have to congratulate President Kgalema Motlanthe for choosing this date”, says Claire Volkwyn, senior producer of the event.  “It means that by the time we kick off on 18 May, African Utility Week will be perfectly poised for the new government policies and regulatory issues with regards to power generation.”

Eskom will be a host utility for the conference and exhibition at the CTICC in Cape Town from 18 to 22 May this year.  African Utility Week is the largest and most successful utility event on the continent.  Eskom will join the City of Cape Town as host utility for thousands of delegates and key industry experts who will be discussing the challenges facing the energy and utility sectors in Africa.

The unique training, networking and discussion platforms will demonstrate how utilities can be more efficient and offer cost-effective services through improved infrastructure maintenance, load management, delivery and revenue management choices.

Africa’s power potential has never been better positioned for growth.  With increasing international interest in power development across the continent, and ever increasing direct foreign investment in the power sector, Africa is poised on the edge of a dramatic growth explosion.

It is against this backdrop, focusing on a pro-active future for the business of utilities in Africa, that African Utility Week 2009 is strategically focused on three distinct tracks: Generation Africa; Transmission & Distribution Africa and Metering, Billing/CRM Africa.

Co-located with African Utility Week is Power Indaba, an annual unique, executive two-day meeting forum for ministerial delegations, high-level power executives, policymakers and international financiers. The only event of its kind taking place in Africa, Power Indaba focuses specifically on investment in the African power industry, and is the continent’s best resource for up-to-date information on financing and new business within the sector.
