250MW IPP invitation for Botswana

20 November 2007 – The Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) over the weekend published an ‘invitation to show interest’ for a 250MW independent power station.

The power station, which would fill what the BPC calls a "supply gap”, will have a "gestational period" of no more than two years from 1 January 2008.

Exact details of the IPP have not been finalised, but BPC have confirmed that the utility will buy the capacity and energy from the IPP. It has also not ruled out the possibility of a build, own, operate and transfer agreement.

Electricity demand in Botswana is said to rise to 600MW over the next few years, up from a current demand of 500MW. BPC is concerned that there will not be enough capacity available during the 2010/11 period, shortly before the 33MW Morupule power station comes on stream in 2012.

The closing date for the ‘expression of interest’ is 14 December 2007.
