ZESCO Ltd to refurbish Chishimba Falls Hydro Power Station

The Zambian public power utility, ZESCO Limited, invites sealed Expressions of Interest (EOI) from eligible bidders for the rehabilitation and extension of the Chishimba Falls Hydro Power Station.

The existing 6MW Chishimba Falls run-of-river small hydropower scheme is located on the Luombe River approximately 60km west of the town of Kasama in the Northern Province of Zambia.

The project for the rehabilitation and uprating of this scheme consists mainly of a new powerhouse, which will be constructed alongside the existing A and B powerhouses, to house 3 x 5MW horizontal shaft Francis turbine generator units.

A new 66 kV switchyard will be constructed to the north of new power station C. A new waterway and penstock will be provided for Station C units 2 and 3, whereas the Station B penstocks will be diverted to supply Station C unit 1.

The works shall also include a new intake and waterway for Station C, modification to the intake and waterways of station B and construction of new housing and facilities for the employer’s operational staff.

Stations A and B will be retired, decommissioned and made safe during and after the construction of the new station C.

Chishimba Falls SHPP ZESCO Limited

For the realisation of the Chishimba Falls SHPP ZESCO Limited, as the Project Executing Agency, is inviting suitably qualified and experienced contractors to participate in the tender for the award of contract for the implementation of civil works for the Project.

This invitation relates to the electrical and mechanical works contract. General duties for the electrical and mechanical works include:

  • Engineering, design and construction services;
  • Procurement and installation equipment;
  • Testing, commissioning and hand over;
  • Co-ordination with civil works contractor;
  • Follow international safety and environmental standards

An outline description of the works is given in detail in the pre-qualification document.

Pre-selection of contractors:

The prequalification of experienced independent contractors is subject to the regulations contained in the “Guidelines for Procurement of Goods, Works and associated Services in Financial Cooperation with Partner Countries” (see https://www.kfw-entwicklungsbank.de/Download-Center/PDF-DokumenteRichtlinien/Vergabe-E.pdf.

The contract will be awarded to an independent qualified contractor or joint venture with proven financial capability, experience in the hydropower-sector and the region.

Tender information

Bidding will be conducted through open international bidding and is open to all contractors from eligible source countries.

Qualifications requirements are provided in the detailed EOI document. For further information the interested eligible contractors are requested to send an email to request the detailed “Invitation for Expression of Interest” documents to the email address provided from 08:00 to 12:30 hours and from 14:00 to 16:30 hours respectively Monday to Friday.

Pre-qualification documents can also be collected from the office of Senior Manager Procurement at ZESCO Limited Head Office at the address given below.

The pre-qualification documents should be appropriately bound, sealed and bold labelled and deposited at the address below at or before 10:30 hours on Friday 13 October 2017. Electronic bidding will not be permitted.
