Uganda: UEGCL seeks to develop Muzizi Hydropower project

Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) is developing the Muzizi Hydropower project located in Western Uganda on the Muzizi River, 6km south-east of Lake Albert.

The project will be implemented under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractual arrangement.

Tender information for Muzizi Hydropower project

The procurement process shall be carried out under international competitive bidding with a two-stage process including prequalification stage and tendering stage.

It shall be conducted in accordance with KfW Development Bank’s “Guidelines for Procurement of Goods, Works and associated Services in Financial Cooperation with Partner Countries” which is available at: https://www.kfwentwicklungsbank.de/Download-Center/PDF-Dokumente-Richtlinien/Vergabe-E.pdf

The prequalification process shall be carried out based on two separate lots:

  • Lot 1 – Civil works: The scope of works to be prequalified under lot 1 includes the civil engineering and construction of hydraulic structures such as the dam/weir, intake and reservoir, water conveyance structures such as headrace tunnel, pressure shaft, pipe gallery, powerhouse and tailrace channel, as well as foundations for the switchyard facilities and 132kV and 33kV transmission lines, access roads and operators’ permanent camp and all other civil structures of a hydro power plant including compensation measures.

The scope includes also the O&M management and training of the O&M staff of the client.

  • Lot 2 – Electrical and mechanical works: The scope of works under Lot 2 includes the engineering, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of all mechanical and electrical works including three high-head, multi-jet (6), vertical-axis Pelton turbines and generator sets including control systems, transformers, SCADA, switchyard and balance of plant.

It also includes hydro-mechanical equipment (powerhouse and dam), steel-lined pressure shaft, steel penstock pipes and the 132kV and 33kV transmission lines. The scope includes also the O&M management and training of the O&M staff of the client.


UEGCL is inviting all interested competent bidders to submit applications for prequalification to participate in the bidding process for the selection of an EPC contractor for the project.

At this stage, a company shall only apply to be pre-qualified for either Lot 1 or Lot 2.

The closing date and time for the submission of the responses to this request for prequalification is 07 August 2017 by 16:00 hours (Ugandan time) at the latest.
