Govender manages SolarReserve’s development team in South Africa, where he spearheaded the development of three solar PV projects now in full operation in South Africa: the Lesedi (75MW), Letsatsi (75MW) and Jasper (96MW) projects. In addition he was instrumental in development of the Redstone 100 MW CSP project which was awarded preferred bidder status in round 3 of the South African REIPPP program. Govender continues to build on SolarReserve’s success in South Africa as well as focusing further development activities in Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Ghana, Nigeria and other African countries.
Govender has over 17 years of experience in the renewable energy sector concentrated on the research and development of solar, wave and wind energy as well as biomass projects. During his career he has developed 3,250 MW of large-scale solar power projects throughout Africa.
Prior to joining SolarReserve, Govender was a Research Manager for the Renewable Energy Research and Development Department within the technology group of Eskom, the largest utility in Africa. Projects initiated under his management include the wave energy program and co-firing generation projects for coal stations in South Africa. He also served as Project Manager for Eskom’s 100 MW concentrated solar power project located in Upington, South Africa, and as a Deputy Director for the South Africa Department of Energy, where he was responsible for the Renewable Energy Market Transformation Project, solar water heating program and the two hybrid renewable projects managed by the department.
Govender has a Master of Engineering Sciences degree from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and is also a registered professional engineer with ECSA.
