Namibian national electricity company secures IPP

In southern Africa, the Namibian national electricity company, NamPower, has selected ALTEN Energías Renovables to develop, execute and operate a photovoltaic (PV) solar power plant.

Located on the outskirts of Mariental, the plant will occupy 100Ha, with an estimated annual production of 116GWh, which will meet the country’s energy needs equivalent to 3%, a press release stated.

The power plant will have a 45.5MWp in installed capacity and is said to be one of the biggest in sub-Saharan Africa.

The media statement further revealed that the project has started the financial closure process and implementation planning phases, with commissioning scheduled for early 2018.

According to the news release, the investment vehicle (ALTEN Hardap) is already set-up and consists of NamPower with 19% share, local investors and the ALTEN Energías Renovables group.

Under the terms of the tender, the independent power producer (IPP) will be in charge of completing development of the energy production plant, its financing, managing the construction and its subsequent operations as well as maintenance.

The solar PV plant will have around 140,000 crystalline silicon panels mounted on solar trackers that will move every day from east to west on a horizontal axis. Read more…

The financial closure procedures are underway as well as the selection of the contractor and the implementation planning engineers.

Commenting on the development, the Deputy President of the IPP, Juan Laso, said: “We expect to have excellent results over the next few years, results that are underpinned by clean, sustainable technologies.”

Namibia is highly dependent on imported energy but the new infrastructure is expected t will make the country’s energy mix more balanced and reduce its energy dependency on neighbouring countries by nearly 5%.  Read more…
