Uganda: SMEC to manage development of 183MW hydropower project

In East Africa, the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) has awarded SMEC a contract to provide project management and construction supervision services on the 183MW Isimba hydropower project.

SMEC will help UEGCL oversee the performance of various contractors, including the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor and owner’s engineer, the Water Power magazine reported.

Hydropower plant to boost country generation

SMEC, a consultancy service for industrial projects, will manage the hydropower project that is located on the Nile River, 90km northeast of Kampala.

[quote]The utility magazine added that the plant will extend over 2,865 hectares and will include a concrete gravity dam, a clay-core rockfill dam, spillway, powerhouse, switching stations and auxiliary power transmission works (including the 42km 132 kV Isimba-Bujagali transmission line).

Once completed, the plant will generate 1,040GWh of electricity per annum, and is expected to increase the country’s capacity by 23%.

Implementing energy efficient technology

In other Ugandan news, the government will be collaborating with power distributor, Umeme, to distribute 311,000 light emitting diode (LED) bulbs to some parts of the country.

This LED rollout will be the third time in nine years, since distribution programme’s inception in 2007.

The Daily Monitor reported that three LED bulbs, each with a capacity of 7 watts will be given out to 103,000 households in different areas in Ntinda, Port Bell, Kisugu, Ggaba, Kireka, Kajjansi and Entebbe Municipality, in exchange for three incandescent bulbs of varying watts.
