On Thursday, South Africa’s largest primary listed REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust), Growthpoint Properties, announced that it is going ahead with its largest rooftop solar installation, which has a 6MW generation target.

South African engineering, consulting and project management provider, AECOM, has been selected to be the principle agent that will be responsible for Electrical Design Reviews and Structural Integrity Assessments.

According to the project management firm, they will be working together with the real estate developers on a range of solar rooftop projects and existing building performance ratings, where low-performance buildings are identified and corrective measures proposed.

The property firm has already completed the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels with the capacity to generate over 3.2MWp at seven of its office, retail and industrial properties.

AECOM explained: “These rooftop solar installations are at its landmark assets across the country, including Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, the Constantia Village mall, Bayside mall and Airport Industria.

“In addition, the company has identified over 70 buildings across its portfolio for possible future solar PV installations.”

AECOM explained that they have been approached by Growthpoint to provide a proposal to manage the certification process of 11 sites, including two office parks in its existing building portfolio.

The property firm will deploy the Green Star SA Existing Building Performance (EBP) v1 rating tool developed by the Green Building Council of South Africa.

Peet Pelser, Practice Area Lead – Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing & Sustainability, Building Engineering, explained: “A Four Star rating acknowledging best practice is targeted for all buildings.”
