Today the South African minister of energy, Mmamoloko Kubayi, MP in partnership with the Mayor of eThekwini Metro Municipality, Cllr Zandile Gumede, will host the Women in Energy Dialogue and a launch of Women in Energy Awards.

The department of energy explained in a statement that the purpose of the two events is to encourage women to participate in energy sector as well as recognise their contribution.

Women in Energy Dialogue

The dialogue, which will be held during the course of the day, will focus on the energy gender strategy, sharing of information on achievements, challenges and how women can advance themselves within the energy sector.

In the evening, the Minister will launch the Women in Energy awards to recognise women in the energy sector.

The two events will be celebrating women in line with the Women’s Month and the OR Tambo Centenary.

The theme of the event is ‘The year of OR Tambo: Women in Energy United in Moving South Africa Forward.’

Minister Kubayi will also conduct an Energy Imbizo as part of government’s public participation programme at Ward 53 Amaoti Township, in Inanda.

The imbizo will be an engagement platform with the Minister and the Community of Amaoti Township on critical energy challenges and how the department can assist in addressing those challenges.

Eskom celebrates Women in the sector

Eskom’s gender equity programmes, including Eskom’s Women Advancement Programme (EWAP), fit into Eskom’s substantial transformation drive.

The EWAP initiative was established in 2013 and seeks to make deliberate and considered interventions to advance and deploy women in Eskom.

It comprises of six focus area namely:

  1. Women in leadership – increasing the representivity of women in leadership positions
  2. Women in nuclear – building a cadre of women to fill critical roles at our world-class nuclear programmes
  3. Women in technical roles – developing a pipeline of women to occupy technical roles
  4. Conducive work environment – developing a gender inclusive programme to influence a progressive, inclusive and sustainable organisational culture
  5. Employee value proposition – ensuring HR practices and policies are geared towards empowering women and supporting their advancement
  6. Powerful partnerships – partnering with institutions of common interest to enable the development of global leaders amongst women

According to the parastatal, the EWAP aims to ensure a healthy pipeline of women, starting at high school level, and preparing them for a career at Eskom. Read more…
