Last week, South African power utility, Eskom, connected 1,500 households in Risinga View village near Giyani in Limpopo, marking the first time being connected to the national power grid.
The project at Risinga View started in July 2016 and took four months to complete. It was energised from the Giyani Substation, feeder Mangombe 22kV.
Limpopo project rollout
The utility’s customer service division will conduct customer education in the area to ensure that the new customers are well-versed in the safe use of electricity.
The Giyani Hub, Shop A1, at Masingita Shopping Complex will always be on hand to assist customers from Risinga with their electricity related queries.
Eastern Cape rollout
In November, the utility announced that 174 households in the Eastern Cape province were connected to the national grid for the first time.
The parastatal said at the time: “Eskom overcame difficult mountainous terrain to bring smiles to these 174 families of Mechachaneng Village in Matatiele, successfully connecting their homes with electricity.
“And at this rate, we are gradually moving towards our target of 207,332 connections by the end of this financial year (31 March 2017).”
Report criminal activity
Eskom would also like to urge its new and existing customers to refrain from purchasing and connecting electricity illegally. For more information customers should contact the customer hub on the following numbers: 015 811 9271/9272/9278.
“We also urge our new customers to be on the lookout for illegal connections and those who tamper with meters. These are criminal acts, which rob communities of a stable electricity supply,” the utility explained.
Should the community witness such acts, Eskom urges them to send an anonymous SMS to the crime line on 32211 to report them.
