Japanese multinational innovation company, Toshiba Corporation, has declared interests to assisting the Ugandan government with geothermal energy exploration.
In East Africa, Uganda’s permanent secretary at the ministry of energy and mineral development, Dr Fred Kabagambe-Kaliisa has stated that the exploration of geothermal energy resources is among government’s energy plans.
Kabagambe-Kaliisa was responding to Toshiba’s declaration wanting to help the country diversify its energy mix.
Energy policy includes geothermal energy resources
The East African Business Week reported that Toyoaki Fujita, business development executive of Toshiba’s Energy Systems and Solutions Company, said the firm hopes to build a strong partnership with Uganda while contributing to the country’s development of sustainable power supply.
Kabagambe-Kaliisa said: “We are very confident that the government of Uganda and Toshiba will create a strong Public-Private-Partnership to develop the geothermal energy resources.”
“The development of Uganda’s geothermal energy resources is in line with our energy policy objectives of increasing power generation capacity and diversifying our energy mix in order to achieve least cost, affordable and stable energy supply,” the minister stated.
It is reported that the east African country has rich geothermal potential that is equivalent to 500MW.
At present, Uganda’s installed electricity generation capacity is estimated at 852MW with 60% of that said to be generated from hydroelectric power.
Adding geothermal to the mix will contribute to the country’s power supply stability and the ability to meet rising demand stimulated by high economic growth, which is said to be currently increasing at about 10% per a year.
In the African market, Toshiba has delivered four geothermal turbines to Kenya that started commercial operation in 2015.
The innovation company has also concluded partnership agreements with geothermal power development companies in Ethiopia, Tanzania and last month in Djibouti.
All agreements are set to cover comprehensive collaboration in the geothermal power generation business.
