Mauritius reaches renewable energy agreement with Italy

The Mauritius Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea, for cooperation in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The Italian government will invest 2 million euros towards the MoU.

According to Ivan Collendaveloo, deputy Minister of Energy and Public Utilities in Mauritius, the MoU will help the two countries to improve scientific research on energy technologies.

The agreement will result in the introduction of new smart grid technologies and help improve reliability of grid networks through the expansion of renewable energy portfolios.

The two countries will collaborate to provide energy stakeholders with training and capacity building in energy efficiency.

The first project to be implemented under the MoU will be the conversion of electrical irrigation pumps into solar pumps.

A joint working group will be established, which will regularly meet in the two countries. The group will follow up on the progress of initiatives to be implemented under the MoU.
