Speaking on Monday at a briefing session focused on renewable energy, Deputy Executive Director of Agora Energiewende, Markus Steigenberger highlighted the similarities between the German Energiewende and South Africa's renewable energy transition.

Organised by the Centre for Environmental Rights in partnership with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Steigenberger's address was dedicated at revealing some of the lessons learnt in the German Energiewende and how these lessons could inform South Africa’s own transition to renewable energy.

South African renewable industry

In an interview with ESI Africa, Steigenberger said the gathering was motivated by “...the developments in South Africa in terms of energy policy are similar to what we’ve seen in Germany for the last 15-20 years.”

“What South Africa has achieved; is that the cost for renewable energy, especially wind and solar has come down to a level where they are actually the cheapest generation technology resources and that is something we have achieved in Germany as well,” he noted.

“These large coal plants are not useful anymore and are blocking the development, in South Africa there is a lower share of wind and solar system but you have the opportunity now to think ahead and learn from the mistakes that Germany made.

According to Steigenberger, Germany woke up too late and has realised that the large coal power plants are not helping the future power system, adding that South Africa has better chance to avoid that mistake.

Renewable energy programme

Responding to a question about the current situation in the South African renewable industry, Steigenberger said: “South Africa has achieved fantastic results with the renewable programme over past few years, the costs for wind and solar are significantly cheaper than in Germany and also significantly cheaper than any other electricity generation technology.”

He said, however, the current situation is stalling the development of wind and solar.

“What is happening is that the process which started years ago, building the renewable industry is now threatened and if there is no additional capacity coming online – it will have a negative effect on the very young renewable energy industry in South Africa.”

Steigenberger stated that during the session, the question that was often raised was about the implications for jobs in the coal sector.

He suggested that the transition should be implemented to benefit everyone even in the regions that are highly dominated by coal sector.

“In the coal sector you have these highly concentrated jobs in one region, and you have to think carefully about the transition in those regions; not to lose the people and make everyone benefit from the transition."

  1. Was there any discussion of the price of electricity in Germany? It’s the second highest in Europe. Beaten by Denmark – which is highly dependent on wind turbine electricity. Here’s a comparison.

    Was there any discussion of Germany’s dependence on lignite – brown coal – the worst polluting kind and on hard or black coal? So far in 2017, 41.2% of Germany’s electricity came from coal, a further 9% from gas.

    Personally, I wish Germany had spent all it has spent (billions!) erecting their solar panels in countries on the equator. I suggest the use of the tool in this link. Select the 22nd of December 2016 (their winter solstice).

    Today there is some 40GW of solar panels installed in Germany. On that day that day, production peaked at 4.3GW.
    Now select the 21st of June (summer solstice). A peak of 26.9GW
    Now imagine those panels on the equator – 27GW or better year-round!

    In summary, I hope South Africa does not follow Germany’s lead. The claim that “the cheapest generators are wind and solar” are contradicted where-ever they are installed at industrial levels.
