The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has advised all residential power consumers to regularly inspect and rewire electrical wiring systems in order to prevent fire accidents.
TANESCO’s Principal Engineer for Safety and Claims, Donart Makingi, said customers should have their houses rewired after every 15 years to maintain safety, reports Daily News.
Makingi was speaking at an annual event, which was organised by the Fire and Rescue Brigade brought together various key rescue and safety stakeholders to showcase their works and services.
He underlined that electrical supplies also have an expiry date, which is why it is important to rewire houses after every 15 years to maintain safety against fire accidents resulted from electric faults.
According to the TANESCO official, fire accidents often result from poor wiring installations fitted by electricians who have not been registered by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority or the Contractors Registration Board.
Causes of electrical faults
“Overloading power strip (extension block) can also cause an electrical fault, thus resulting in a building’s fire accident,” Makingi pointed out.
He urged people to only buy quality electrical appliances that have been verified by Tanzania Bureau of Standards. Read more: Tanzania to work with Uganda on natural gas pipeline project
“We advise customers to report to Tanesco any fault in the electrical system in their buildings to prevent fire accidents,” he stated.
Makingi advised customers to consult Tanesco before supplying power to a new room added to a surveyed house because power needs might increase after the new room was connected to power.
