Importance of data science and revenue coverage

Information is the most important tool in the digital world we live in states Ntiyiso Consulting head of Information Technology Lenka Mohapi on the topic of data science.

Speaking to Khaya Sithole on POWER Business about data science and revenue coverage, Mohapi explained that data science is a multidisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data.

The Ntiyiso technology specialist explained that “not all information is valuable. It is not worth it to have every single piece of information about every single thing.”

Making data science relevant

According to Mohapi, companies can achieve a lot with very little information. He also stressed that with personal information being pervasive, not all information can be used.

“We are coming back from a time where everybody wants to gather every little thing, only to find that they cannot use all of it,” he adds.

Mohapi shared that local governments are beginning to apply data science as they have a wealth of information on their citizens that can add value to improving their customer service.

He adds that the government has people’s addresses, Identity numbers, as well as payment history. “What happens is that a lot of our municipalities sit with data in various forms and the biggest challenge is to consolidate it all and have it housed in one place.”
