The South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) is looking for a Programmes Manager – a professional whose vision resonates with theirs – to create a thriving commercial wind power industry in South Africa which positively contributes to the nation’s social, environmental and economic objectives.
With that said, SAWEA is in search of an individual who can strategically assist using their unique skill set acquired over the last 5+ years in the renewable energy industry – a skill set which covers event and research management as well as enabling the six established working groups.
If you are the ideal candidate for this brilliant opportunity, you will have a master’s degree in engineering, economics or social sciences coupled with wind industry experience. SAWEA is searching for an individual who exhibits proven project and events management skills. You must be able to leverage your networks and understanding of the intricacies of the REIPPPP and its policies enabling you to effectively oversee and strategically guide the implementation of SAWEA’s events and data management programmes.
You should have extraordinary organisational and time management skills, enabling you to execute your responsibilities under tight deadlines ensuring that you meet defined growth targets for the association. Championing the entire events management and coordination aspects, you will be responsible for the execution of all annual events, including their flagship event – Windaba.
It is pivotal that you focus on growing the delegate count while maintaining a high industry perception of the association, appropriately identifying and onboarding leading influencers as key speakers who add value to the guests understanding of industry best practices, changes in policies and emerging trends. With that said you will find yourself playing a focal role in designing innovative show programmes which speak to the needs of the industry.
In addition to this, you will utilise your financial capacity to manage event budgets and deliver conferences of a high standard which bring physical financial gains into the organisation. It goes without saying you will know exactly how to execute fundraising activities that obtain the buy-in of donors.
As the Manager of Strategic Programmes, you will understand the value of big data and its corresponding insights. You will find yourself responsible for collecting and collating industry statistics for SAWEA’s data management programmes. This will include collecting information surrounding socio-economic development, enterprise development, job creation and energy production by liaising with data management consultants as well as wind farms and other data sources.
Through managing the flow and collection of information by junior consultants, you will produce annual wind energy reports and initiate research projects related to wind industry-specific topics. Using your knowledge of the industry you will focus on producing research that is “usable by industry,” be it related to wind energy and storage, the role of wind energy in a just energy transition, market diversification or emerging trends in PPA’s etc. Your ultimate goal is to provide tangible value to the wind market through intelligent research.
Thirty percent of your responsibilities will contribute to successfully ensuring that SAWEA’s six Industry Working Groups remain active and that their impact is measurable. The groups will rely on you to utilise your extensive knowledge of the industry, your business acumen, fundraising expertise and strong administration skills to support them in achieving the desired results for their establishment. These groups include Economic Development, Manufacturers & Local Content, Assets, Technical, Environment and Policy & Markets.
Finally, your excellent communication and management skills coupled with your passion for environmental sustainability and renewable energy will be relied on as you support the CEO on all strategic matters including stakeholder management, advocacy, lobbying, PR, representing the association at public events and overall, growing the membership count of SAWEA.

• Must have a postgraduate degree in
Engineering, Science or Economics
• Those with a master’s degree will be prioritised
• A minimum of 5+ years of experience
working within South Africa’s renewable energy sector with a focus on wind
• Extensive knowledge of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme and associated concepts such as economic development, tariffs, power purchase agreements, integrated resource plan, ministerial determinations, etc
• Excellent event management acumen
• Familiar with relevant SAeEnergy legislation and regulations
• Strong general and project management experience
• Familiar with concepts of social and enterprise development
• Experience with procuring and managing service providers
