Eskom has received financing from the World Bank, African Develop Bank, and New Development Bank towards the cost of the Eskom Investment Support Project (EISP) and Eskom Renewables Support Project (ERSP).

The utility intends to apply part of these funds towards payment for a battery energy storage system (BESS) project, using the direct payment disbursement method as defined by the World Bank’s Disbursement Guidelines for Investment Project Financing.

Eskom is inviting sealed bids from eligible bidders for the design, engineering, supply, construction, erection, testing and commission of an 80MW/320MWh Battery Energy Storage System for Vredendal in the Western Cape.

The proposed facility will help to manage the power generated by the nearby 100MW Sere Wind Farm Project, which is located in the Matzikama District Municipality in Vredendal.

Closing date for submissions is 11 September 2020.

The selected developer will be expected to complete the project within a period of seven months or earlier, to a maximum period of nine months, for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the facility.

The developer will also then be expected to operate and maintain the proposed facility at Koekenaap, Matzikama District Municipality, Vredendal, Western Cape, for a period of five years.

Site inspection

There will be a site meeting on 20 August 2020 at 10.00am at the Eskom Sere Wind Farm Auditorium at the Skaapvlei Substation in the vicinity of Koekenaap, Western Cape. GPS coordinates 31°29′49″S 18°03′48″E.

There will also be a pre-bid clarification meeting on 27 August 2020 at 14.00pm on MS Teams.
