Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has taken decisive steps to ramp up customer metering efforts following consultation with five metering vendors handling the deployment and installation.
The five vendors involved are Mojec International, Cresthill Engineering, Armesse consulting, Momas Electricity Meters, and Meron Nigeria.
The plan is to meter 75,000 households within the next three months and suppliers have been requested to fast-track all installations. This move is prompted in efforts to reduce consumer complaints around estimated bills, but also in efforts to improve service delivery in line with the KEDCO vision.
According to a report published by Blue Ink media, the management team has commenced consultation with three additional meter vendors with the objective of getting as many customers in the KEDCO area metered as soon as possible.
In a statement, the head of corporate communication at KEDCO, Ibrahim Sani Shawai, said: “We are not resting on our mission to ensure that we terminate estimated billing because it remains the major way to end customers’ complaints while improving satisfaction. We are really concerned about the need to ensure speedy circulation of these meters across the board. This is why we are in negotiation with three additional vendors to make it eight.
“We are forthwith calling on all concerned customers who are yet to get meters to come get their meters for effective service delivery. This time is now. The meters are affordable and easy to get.’’
Managing director and CEO of KEDCO, Dr Jamil Isyaku Gwamna, added: “We don’t derive any pleasure whatsoever that we still have complaints from customers, no matter the reduction in the statistics, we are worried and have taken the 75,000 in three months. We have to do what we have to do. This is KEDCO where every customer is king and we intend to keep it that way.
“Soon more vendors will be brought on board and we will push until every households get a meter; because as far as KEDCO is concerned, it is meter time.’’
The Kano disco boss appealed to customers to get their meter in time, noting that there are enough meters on ground for those who meet the requirements for metering.
“All customers who meet the requirements are metered within the stipulated period and without any delays. It is their right to regulate and determine their unit of consumption, as well as what to pay based on what they use. Since we are always exposed to whatever will make our customers happy, we have directed the vendors to strengthen capacity in meter deployment and installations in all our franchise states. We have also given them a monthly target in terms of deployment and installation of meters,” Shawai concluded.
