A metering journey, from traditional to smart pre-payment

The Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) metering manager, Sariel Etwire, revealed that the company is moving its 3.5 million customers away from traditional pre-payment to smart pre-payment.

ESI Africa sat down with the metering expert at the 2018 annual African Utility Week in Cape Town.

In terms of the journey to all things smart, ECG’s executive said: “We are also trying to extend our metering system to critical points where we can have enough nodes to be able to analyse our losses and create the energy balance model.”

According to Etwire, all of these new projects will help to reduce the company’s energy losses. “Our philosophy is – if you do not measure then you wouldn’t know what it is that you need to improve upon.”

Looking further afield, Etwire’s vision for the power utility is to see satisfied customers and realising reduced losses.

“We have various themes, one of them is to improve upon our customer service delivery. We are aware that our customers want smarter systems, better service and transparency in their metering data.

“These are some of the policies we are driving at and changing just to address customer service.”
