On Monday, Eskom Group Chief Executive, Brian Molefe received the Africa investor (Ai) Infrastructure Investment Champion of the Year (2016) award for his role in driving infrastructure investment into critical sectors in South Africa.

The award recognises Molefe’s role in stimulating economic and private sector growth in South Africa and the African continent in general, the utility said in a statement.

“The awards are held alongside the annual Ai CEO Infrastructure and Sovereign Investment Summit held in Johannesburg today and tomorrow,” the parastatal said.

Eskom drives infrastructure developments

According to the power company, it is currently executing the biggest infrastructure development project in its history, aimed at building new generating capacity to meet South Africa’s rising electricity demand.

The capacity expansion programme is expected to reach completion within the next five years.

This programme is expected to increase the company’s generation capacity by 17,384MW, transmission lines by 9,756km and substation capacity by 42,470MVA.

Since inception in 2005, the capacity expansion programme has contributed 7,031MW of generation capacity, 6,048km of transmission lines and 31,590MVA of substation capacity.

The Africa investor Awards

“The Africa investor Awards (Ai Awards) are unique pan-African business and capital market investment awards that recognise and reward the achievements of the private sector across wide-ranging sectors and disciplines,” the power company explained.

The utility added that the awards attract market leaders from across the continent and applaud their achievements. “They also celebrate the work of institutional investors, governments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).”
