We spoke with Mandy Rambharos, General Manager: Just Energy Transition office, Eskom about the energy transition in Africa and the role that women leaders in the sector can play in ensuring a just, reliable, inclusive and sustainable energy transition for South Africa and for greater African continent.
She shared the mandate of her office, the opportunities and challenges the energy transition presents, as well as some more personal insight into the woman behind the title.
According to Rambharos, a just energy transition means moving away from the old way of doing things to a new way of doing things, “so that you end up with a society that is thriving, that has clean sustainable electricity, sees a number of opportunities in this transition and that can grow. For me, that’s what a just transition looks like.”
She adds: “We need to transition towards new ways of doing things. But doing it in a just way is as equally important as the transition itself.”
Rambharos also explains what this means for Eskom: “What we’re talking about is actually completely changing our business model for the country. It’s changing the way we do business. Our economy has been built on cobalt and fossil fuels for many generations. And, we need to pay tribute to that heritage. But as I was saying earlier, you know, we’ve found that there’s problems with that way of doing business and we need to transition to a new way of doing business.”
