13 September – The ministry of energy in Uganda has confirmed the purchase of testing equipment for energy-saving lamps.

The equipment will be housed at the Uganda National Bureau of Standards’ (UNBS) premises in Kampala. Already, the USBS has drafted standards for the bulbs and all compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) will be tested prior to selling.

According to James Baanabe, assistant energy commissioner, this was in a move to prevent the sale of fake bulbs.

To date, 800 000 CFLs have been distributed, free of charge, in Entebbe, Kampala and Mukono.
