Energy Efficiency

The power and energy market recognises that climate change is real and among the mitigations against this climate crisis to lowering the global carbon footprint is through energy efficiency. Research and development studies indicate that the building sector, through the adoption of smart buildings, has the most potential to reduce energy use. Carbon pricing coupled with the reduction in use of fossil-fuel are central to attaining energy efficiency. Energy efficiency offers the cleanest resource for clean energy transition while addressing climate change effects understood in the Paris Agreement. In order to realise energy transition, government entities are advised to put measures in place in a form of regulation and standards, these include; net-zero carbon economy, incentivising electric vehicles which will lead to increase in charging stations, replace incandescent light bulbs with LEDs.

Open smart metering system done in South Africa

[img:382-smart%20meter_0.jpg| ]20 March 2012 - An open and interoperable smart grid / advanced metering infrastructure system has been installed and is fully live at the Rand Aid Luxury Retirement Village in Modderfontain, Johannesburg in South Africa.

The implementation was done by Kamstrup’s South African partner and system integrator Livewire Engineering & Consulting in Cape Town. This took six weeks, including integration between Livewire’s Meter Data Management (MDM) system and Kamstrup’s head-end UtiliDriver and delivery of a Kamstrup Radio Mesh Network, concentrators and single- and three phase smart meters.

Eskom partner launches Energy Efficiency Services

UK launches fund to support lower SA carbon growth projects

According to the high commission, the money is part of a global fund which seeks to build prosperity “by increasing exports and investments, opening markets, and ensuring access to resources and energy security.

Energy efficiency is SA’s best short-term power solution

Making this point in an address to an energy indaba here, Peters said that in view of serious capacity limitations infrastructure development was a lengthy process, and could not be seen as an interim measure to solve the energy crisis.

SA mines set to provide their own power

Eskom investigates vending system problem

The system is used by prepaid customers to purchase electricity tokens.

Another Eskom warning on possible outages

Eskom spokeswoman Hillary Joffe said the country was running on a margin of as little as 2%, and reiterated that the utility had urged all users to cut power use by at least 10%.

One killed in power protest in Guinea

]Conakry, Guinea --- ESI-AFRICA.COM --- 20 January 2012 - At least one person was killed and more than 30 were injured as Guinean soldiers fired on a crowd protesting against electricity cuts in the port city of Kamsar, north of the capital city of Guinea.

An official from the Guinean Bauxite Company (CBG), which provides electricity to the town, said violence had erupted leaving at least one dead from a bullet wound after soldiers had opened fire on the protesters.
