9 September 2013 – Speaking upon the certification of the utility to ISO9001:2008, Eskom CEO Brian Dames, said, “One of Eskom’s vision elements is to reassume its position as a top five global utility. The ISO 9001:2008 standard, which is the foundation standard for developing internationally recognised management systems, is the main enabler.”
Eskom has received ISO 9001: 2008 certification throughout its entire electricity supply chain. This means its management systems, from its primary energy through to its customer service and electricity delivery functions are certified. The requirements set out in the internationally recognised ISO 9001:2008 standard relate to quality management systems and ensure that organisations implement management systems which enable them to meet customers’ and stakeholders’ needs, as well as uphold statutory and regulatory requirements relating to the products and services offered.
During the drive towards certification, Eskom trained 17,000 employees in the principles of quality and ISO. Dames took pride in the fact that Eskom is the first among South Africa’s public electricity utilities to achieve ISO 9001 certification throughout its entire electricity supply chain. Dames hailed the certification as a stepping stone that would enable Eskom to realise its vision of becoming a high-performance global organisation.
Sipho Tjabadi, Eskom’s general manager of quality management, says, “Our next step is the Business Excellence programme, which will use the ISO 9001 as a foundation, raising Eskom to higher levels of performance and efficiency.”
