Water solutions provider, USC Metering (which trades as Utility Systems) has earned an acclaim from Frost & Sullivan for developing affordable smart water management solutions for the household segment in sub-Saharan Africa.
Based on its recent analysis of the sub-Saharan African smart water management solutions market, Frost & Sullivan recognised Utility Systems with the 2018 sub-Saharan African Competitive Strategy Innovation and Leadership Award.
Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that leverages competitive intelligence to successfully execute a strategy that results in stronger market share, competitive brand positioning, and customer satisfaction.
The company leverages its experience and knowledge in the water sector to develop premium standard transfer specification (STS) prepayment smart water meters and electronic water management devices for the highly water-stressed, cost-conscious household segment.
“Utility Systems’ advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system, built around its latest water management device the utiliMeter, enables the remote control, configuration, and management of water meters in the domestic, small commercial, and bulk market segments,” said Fredrick Royan, vice-president at Frost & Sullivan.
“The device, an electronic device with built-in communication capabilities, is instrumental to the system’s architecture because it connects to a pulse output water meter,” Royan added.
Water metering system options
The device’s various configurations enable water service suppliers to implement a mix of several metering system options, such as free basic water, lifeline water, emergency water, flat-rate billing, prepayment, automated meter reading (AMR), or AMI.

Utility Systems devices enable water service providers to monitor and control each consumer’s water consumption based on a daily or monthly limit by employing a real-time clock and integrated, low-power, self-latching diaphragm valve.
Other key features include an in-field replaceable battery, liquid crystal display, and ultraviolet protection.
“The company encourages partnerships with local companies, including those involved in billing systems and the manufacturing of meter boxes to provide tailor-made, smart metering solutions for each location,” noted Royan.
