Interview with Andy le May

Andy is the Founder of EWIZZ Electric Vehicles, who will be participating in a panel discussion and showcasing technology as part of Energy Revolution Africa during African Utility Week.

Please tell a bit about the work you do.
We offer personal zero emission electric vehicles for city transportation.

What about this work most invigorates and inspires you?
It is driving a clean and sustainable future.

What has been the biggest challenges you have faced so far?
Lack of awareness and understanding about electric vehicles in Africa.

Do you agree that an energy revolution is underway in Africa?
Absolutely. It makes sense on all levels – financial, environmental and societal.

What are you most concerned about when you think about the future of our energy resources?
That large vested interest force us to make the wrong technology choices.

Do you believe that South Africa can and is moving towards more sustainable/ cleaner transport services? Please give a reason for your answer?
Yes, because again it makes sense on all levels. But it needs more support from government to help drive it.

Can you comment and give stats or facts on the cost saving and environmental benefits of using electric vehicles?
For one month’s fuel for your car you can fuel one of our personal electric vehicles for three years doing the same journey. If charged from the Eskom mix then it would be 10% of the emissions of the car and if charged off solar, as some of our customers do, Zero emission.

How do you feel about the upcoming Energy Revolution Africa to be held with African Utility Week this year?
It is critical to raising awareness and promoting solutions

What do you hope to communicate to expo visitors and the other renewable energy players attending?
The technology is ready and the savings are amazing

What are you most looking forward to?

Turning on the lights in people’s minds

Is there anything else you would like to add?
This is a great initiative to get clean tech out there.
